Penrith Cemetery

Information about the cemetery including opening hours, parking facilities and layout.

About the cemetery

Penrith municipal cemetery was opened in 1872 to ensure that anyone could be buried – regardless of position or wealth.  To date, over 20,000 interments have taken place on a site extending to approximately 10 hectares.

The cemetery is situated on Beacon Edge in an area adjacent to established woodland and is very popular, due to the spectacular views over the Lakeland Fells.

The cemetery contains non-denominational, Roman Catholic, Islamic, Non-Conformist sections and a dedicated children’s area.   A natural woodland burial area is also located at the northern part of the cemetery.

The cemetery is proud to be a Green Flag award site, having held this accreditation consistently since 2014.

Facilities

The on-site chapel is now closed.  A cemetery lodge also exists within the grounds of the cemetery but is now a private residence.

Opening hours

The cemetery is open from dawn until dusk, 365 days per year.

Parking facilities

Vehicles are permitted within the cemetery but no car park exists within the cemetery itself.

Visitors and funeral attendees are requested to park on the roadside, along Beacon Edge.

A small number of parking spaces are available within some areas of the cemetery for those who have limited mobility or disabilities.

Layout

Due to the size of the site, if visitors are looking for a specific grave, we recommend contacting bereavement services who will provide assistance in locating the grave on your behalf.

We advise you do this as soon as possible as we regret, we cannot always answer queries immediately.
