Adding images to the website

When and how to add images to the website.

When to use an image

We use images to illustrate news stories, and in the header of the web site's home page.

In the rest of the website we only use images where they help us give information and should be used to support clearly written text.

Content usually works best without relying on images, we need to ensure that the content includes all the information customers need to complete their task.

We don't use decorative images, we only use images where they meet a real user need.

Avoid images that include text, any text should be in the content not the image.

Check how images present on the website.

Image accessibility

You must ensure information contained in an image is understandable to somebody that can't see it.

For customers that have visual impairments or are using assistive technology we need to provide alternative text with the image. Alternative text, or alt text, is read out by screen readers and displayed if an image does not load or if images have been switched off.

Copyright and attribution

You must consider copyright. You should only use images supplied, or approved by the comms team from our own image libraries.

Where the image is from a source outside of Westmorland and Furness Council it should be attributed.
