The different ways you can display contact details

When you need to display contact details on a page, you firstly need to understand why you need them on the page. Usually, you need to display contact details if there's:

  • a task
  • a need for general help around guidance or information that isn't around a specific task

You should be wary of displaying contact details when they're not needed. This can increase calls to services when the information on the page is self-serve.

Contact details around tasks

If a user has a task to complete in a page, for example, you're telling them to email a service in the middle of the page, you should display the contact details inline with the copy. The reason for doing it this way is so users have the details in front of them as opposed to searching the page or another page for the details.

You should not use terms like 'contact us, see below' or 'email us' - with no indication of where the users should go. This is because it makes it harder for people using screen readers and people with dyslexia to find the information.

Example

You can either:

  • get a disc from a location near you
  • email customer services and they will post a disc to you

Contact details for general help

If there's a need for users to have the service contact details on a page, for example, if its a complicated piece of guidance, you can display the contact details at the bottom of the page as a block.

You should not use terms like 'contact us, see below' or 'email us' - with no indication of where the users should go.

For example, our ceremonies page does not have a task for users to complete, it is only informing users of what the service provides. The contact details are displayed at the bottom of the page if users need to contact the service for whatever reason. See the example on the ceremonies page.
