Numbered lists

When to use and how to write a numbered list.

Use numbered lists instead of a bulleted list to guide people through a process.

Each point starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.

There is no need for a lead-in line, just a relevant header then go straight in to your list.

For example, instructions to make a cup of tea:

How to make a cup of tea

  1. Fill the kettle and switch it on.
  2. While the kettle is boiling get a cup, tea bag and milk ready.
  3. When the kettle has boiled use the hot water to warm your cup.
  4. Add the teabag to your cup and carefully pour in boiling water.
  5. Add milk to taste.
