Care homes
Professionally trained and experienced staff provide support in safe and comfortable care homes. They’re trained in the highest standards of care, promoting your independence and helping you maintain strong relationships with family and friends.
Care homes are for anyone over the age of 18 who cannot live independently, either temporarily or in the long term. There are specialist services for older people or to help you live in a supported environment with other adults with a physical or learning disability.
Care homes provide nutritious meals and personal care seven days a week. You can also get active through activities such as chair exercise and go outside in the gardens and local community.
You can find a care home and see inspection ratings and reports on the Care Quality Commision (CQC) website.
Shared Lives
Shared Lives carers provide support in their own home, sharing their family life. You’ll have your own private bedroom and can stay for a few hours a week, for the weekend or a holiday, or as part of a long-term arrangement. You can get as much support as you need, which can include helping you to:
- join local groups and take part in activities such as crafts, sports and local events
- share and enjoy hobbies and interests with your carer
- be included in family trips and experiences
- access education, employment and various day services
- make and maintain friendships and relationships
Shared Lives carers can offer support to any adult over 18, who is eligible for adult social care.
You can ask your social worker to refer you for Shared Lives care, or you can contact us directly.

You’ll have an adult social care financial assessment to see if the support you get will be fully funded or if you’ll need to pay for some of it. If you’re supported in a long-term arrangement, your housing benefit payment and a personal contribution will go towards living costs. For transport, meals out, hobbies and other activities there’ll be some cost involved.
Extra care housing
Self-contained, accessible properties that promote independent living while providing care if you become ill or need additional support as you grow older. This type of care is usually for older adults, but some schemes may support younger people with a physical or learning disability.
Properties are usually rented through private tenancy, although some can be for sale. They include your own front door, living area, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. They can accommodate individuals or couples. Most will have communal spaces and facilities that all tenants can use, with fob or person-controlled entry into the main building.
Trained care staff are based on site 24-hours a day to help with personal care as needed. All properties have telecare devices, so the care team can respond to any emergency, such as if you fall or become very unwell.
Extra care housing can enable you to move out of a property where you’re finding it difficult to cope, or to move out of a residential care home and return to independent living.
Care packages may be free or low cost, following an adult social care assessment of your care needs and finances. Or you can pay privately for care.
