Emergency road closure on A593 at Skelwith due to damaged culvert

The A593 at Skelwith is closed until next week to allow for emergency repair works on a damaged culvert affected by the water main.

On Wednesday 2 August, an emergency closure was put in place on the A593 due to a suspected burst pipe linked to water works conducted earlier this year.

Upon assessment by Westmorland and Furness Highways earlier today, significant damage to a culvert has been found which requires extensive repair works.

Unfortunately a full closure of the A593 is required to ensure the safety of all road users. A signed diversion route is in place via the B5285 and B5286 (from Coniston to Clappersgate via Hawkshead Hill).

The team are currently obtaining replacement pipe which is due to be delivered on Monday 7 August. We foresee the road to be closed for a further five days, however the full extent of the remedial works will be established following further inspections next week.

Cllr Peter Thornton, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Assets said: “We recognise the inconvenience this unforeseen road closure will cause and appreciate the patience and understanding of the local community, businesses and road users as our teams do all they can to repair the damaged culvert.

“Safety remains our concern and we assure you that we are committed to restoring full access to the A593 at the earliest possible time.”

Frequent updates on the road closure will be provided on the road works on the Westmorland and Furness website and across our social media platforms.
