Emergency works to repair a damaged culvert on the A593 at Skelwith are expected to complete today (10 August).
Westmorland and Furness Highways moved quickly to carry out repairs once the damage had been identified. The road has been fully excavated, assessed and the damaged culvert replaced.
The road will now be resurfaced and works are expected to complete on Thursday, 10 August.
A signed diversion via the B5285 and B5286 (from Coniston to Clappersgate via Hawkshead Hill) will remain in place until the works complete.
All information regarding the works has been published and information about diversion routes should be picked up by Sat Nav devices that display live diversion data.
Cllr Peter Thornton, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Assets said: “Following reports of a suspected burst water pipe last week on the A593 at Skelwith, Westmorland and Furness Highways found significant damage to a culvert, resulting in an emergency road closure to ensure public safety.
“Our highways team put all of their efforts into responding to the complex, emergency situation presented to us, ensuring the works were completed quickly to reduce the impact on local communities.
“The programme is progressing extremely well and as a result, we expect to reopen the road late afternoon on Thursday 10 August.
“We are aware this unforeseen closure has led to significant delays and apologise for the disruption the emergency works have caused. I would like to thank the local community, businesses, and road users for your patience and understanding.”
Frequent updates on the road closure will be provided on the road works on the Westmorland and Furness website and across our social media platforms.
