Westmorland and Furness Council is illuminating landmarks over the weekend to mark Armistice Day (11 November) and Remembrance Sunday (12 November).
From dusk on Friday until Monday, Kendal Town Hall and Penrith Town Hall will be illuminated red, and Barrow Town Hall will be illuminated in the colours of the Union Jack as a tribute to all the service men and women who have lost their lives in times of conflict.
The council is also proudly displaying the symbolic red poppy on many of its buildings, libraries, care homes and vehicles to show support for the Armed Forces community.
In June, Westmorland and Furness Council made a significant commitment to the Armed Forces by signing the national Armed Forces Covenant.
It also has three Armed Forces Champions which champion and advocate on behalf of the Armed Forces Covenant in their localities. These are: Councillor Bill McEwan for Barrow, Councillor Mike Eyles for Eden, and Councillor Vicky Hughes for South Lakeland.
A number of commemorative events and services will be taking place across Westmorland and Furness this weekend for residents to pay their respects.
Councillor Matt Severn, Chairman of Westmorland and Furness Council, said:
“Remembrance is a time for us all to join together in honouring the heroic efforts, achievements and sacrifices made by our Armed Forces and their families, past and present.
“Several of my fellow councillors and senior officers will be attending services across Westmorland and Furness this weekend to pay their respects, and it makes me very humble to be able to lay a wreath and pay my respects in Kendal on behalf of the council.
“Those we lost in both world wars and also in more recent conflicts are very much in my thoughts.”
