A section of the A592 on the shores of Ullswater will be reduced to one lane from next week for essential works to repair a damaged retaining wall.

Starting on Monday 25 November, the Council will address a growing issue found with the structure that supports the A592, ensuring the section of road is safe to remain open throughout winter.

The Council’s four-week improvement programme will see the damaged section of wall removed and replaced with a new mass-fill concrete wall with stone facing. Existing stone from the site will be recycled and used to create a new structure that is in keeping with the local landscape.

To ensure the safety of road users and site operatives, the construction of the new wall will be conducted under a one lane closure using traffic light control that will be manned from 7am to 7pm daily.

Whilst the Council has been preparing to start works, a verge has been closed to avoid the need to restrict traffic use and weekly monitoring has been conducted. Works have also been planned to take place in the winter months to minimise disruption to local communities, businesses and visitors throughout the areas busiest period.

To facilitate efficient delivery of the scheme, night working will be conducted where possible.

Councillor Peter Thornton, Cabinet Member for Highways and ICT said: "We need to repair this retaining wall to ensure the safety of the A592, which is vital to residents, businesses, and visitors to the Ullswater area. By using locally sourced materials and recycling stone from the site, we ensure costs are reduced and the repair blend seamlessly the local landscape.

“The measures we have put in place, including traffic light control and some night working, will help us deliver this project as efficiently as possible, keeping everyone safe on this important route. We appreciate the patience and understanding of road users while this essential work takes place."
