Borderlands 5G innovation on show at Christmas market

The benefits of 5G innovation to business were on show yesterday.

To support the Bowness Glebe Christmas market and give Windermere stakeholders a chance to see the type of technology to be used at Ferry Nab, the Borderlands 5G Innovation Region programme team set up a temporary advanced wireless network at the event.

The event was a huge success with representatives from Connecting Cumbria delivery and management partner AWTG Ltd on site to demonstrate how the provision of advanced wireless technology can be of benefit in such areas and answering any questions which were presented on the day by vendors and visitors of the market.

Bryan Mol of Lake District Biltong was one of the vendors that trailed connectivity from the demonstrator unit. He said: “Small businesses like ours really struggle with connectivity at these kinds of events. If you can’t take electronic payments it can be devastating”.

Feedback from the event will be used to shape the work of the delivery team looking forward, identifying the needs and requirement of potential users and highlighting any areas of query and concern.

Councillor Peter Thornton, Champion for Digital Infrastructure, Westmorland and Furness, said: “There is a real excitement around the work being carried out under the 5G Innovations Programme and the benefits this technology can bring to the residents, businesses and visitors of the Digital Borderlands area. Glebe Park Christmas Market was a great opportunity for the delivery team to talk to potential users about how 5G technology can support our area. I would like to thank the event organisers for their hospitality and hope all involved will agree this was a huge success.”

The Borderlands is one of 10 5G Innovation Regions to share in a £36 million fund from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.  The Innovation Region Programme is part of the Government’s vision for communities across the UK to take full advantage of the transformative effect that advanced wireless connectivity and digital technologies can provide. The Borderlands 5G Innovation Region programme is deploying advanced wireless connectivity at a number of venues across the region and in Cumbria the venue is focused around Windermere Ferry Nab.
