Westmorland and Furness Libraries is proud to announce the launch of its new ‘Go Green’ collection, a specially curated selection of books aimed at inspiring the local community to take meaningful action towards environmental sustainability.
From Monday 7 October, to mark the start of Green Libraries Week, the Go Green Collection will be available for residents across Westmorland and Furness.
This exciting new collection will provide people with free access to a wide range of resources on topics such as climate change, renewable energy, eco-friendly lifestyles and nature conservation. It will also be available in eBook format via the Borrowbox app.
The launch supports the council’s wider commitment to tackling the climate and biodiversity crises with the council committed to ensuring that the organisation is carbon net zero as soon as possible and that the area it serves is carbon net zero by 2037.
As part of their year-long Green Libraries Project action plan, libraries in Westmorland and Furness are also developing further resources to create Sustainability Hubs with the aim to support community groups and individuals to get together and find ways to engage with climate challenges and connect with the natural environment.
Councillor Virginia Taylor, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Sustainable Communities and Localities, said:
“As well as our libraries being places to borrow books, they are community hubs where people come together to learn, share, and take action. The Go Green collection offers practical solutions to some of the biggest challenges we face, and our libraries are pleased to play a part in helping Westmorland and Furness lead the way to carbon net zero.”
Councillor Giles Archibald, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Climate, Biodiversity and Environmental Services, added:
“The launch of the Go Green collection marks a significant step in empowering our community to embrace sustainable living. By providing free access to vital resources on climate action and eco-friendly practices, we’re equipping residents with the knowledge to make a lasting impact and supporting the council’s commitment to a greener future.”
As part of the initiative, residents can also expect a range of information and activities such as ‘Go Green’ events, featuring workshops on sustainable home practices, seed libraries, plant swaps, drop-ins and talks from local environmental experts.
