Council proudly displays symbolic red poppy for Remembrance

Westmorland and Furness Council is proudly displaying the symbolic red poppy to commemorate Remembrance Sunday (10 November) and Armistice Day (11 November).

Featured prominently on many council buildings, libraries, care homes and vehicles, the poppy serves as a symbol of both remembrance and support for the Armed Forces community.

As part of the council’s tribute, the Union Flag will be flown at full mast from flagpoles at the town hall buildings in Barrow, Kendal and Penrith on both days. Additionally, Kendal Town Hall will be illuminated red, while Barrow Town Hall will shine in the colours of the Union Jack as a tribute to the servicemen and women who have lost their lives in times of conflict.

A number of commemorative events and services will take place across Westmorland and Furness, allowing residents to pay their respects.

Councillor Matt Severn, Chair of Westmorland and Furness Council, said:

“Remembrance is a time for us all to come together to remember and honour the sacrifices of our Armed Forces and their families, both past and present.

“Councillors including myself as well as senior officers will be attending services across Westmorland and Furness to pay their respects. I feel humbled to lay a wreath and pay tribute in Kendal on behalf of the council.

“Those we lost in both world wars and also in more recent conflicts are very much in my thoughts.”

Westmorland and Furness Council demonstrated its commitment to the Armed Forces community by signing the National Armed Forces Covenant last year. The covenant ensures that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly and are not disadvantaged in accessing public services by their military service.

The council also now has a website section dedicated to the Armed Forces with advice and support for veterans and their families. For further information, contact armedforces@westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk.
