Essential maintenance is to be carried out on Barrow Dock Museum’s specialised heating system.
To ensure the long-term care of the museum’s collection, key artefacts are being temporarily located into secure storage ahead of the works.
The museum has now closed for Christmas but will reopen on Thursday 2 January, with continued access to the café, play area, toilets, and mall while the main gallery remains closed for works.
They are expected to be completed by early February, after which the collection will be returned and the gallery reopened for visitors to enjoy.
Councillor Virginia Taylor, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Sustainable Communities and Localities, said: “We know how loved the Dock Museum is by visitors, both locally and further afield. By closing early for Christmas during what is often a quieter period, we can relocate our collection with minimal disruption to the public.
“When it reopens on the 2nd of January, the museum will still have plenty on offer, from its Bridge Café and adventure playground to the Herbert Leigh lifeboat display. We thank everyone for their understanding and continued support as we carry out these essential works and look forward to welcoming visitors back soon.”
