A section of the A65 will be fully closed to traffic overnight for four weeks of essential works to repair significant roadside damage.
An accident involving an overturned HGV caused damage to the verge and carriageway, leaving the westbound carriageway unsupported. The site, located between Crooklands roundabout and Nook, has been under temporary traffic control since the incident, allowing the route to remain open to traffic.
From Monday 23 September for approximately four weeks, the impacted section of the A65 will be closed overnight Monday to Friday between 8:00pm to 5:00am, to allow Westmorland and Furness Highways, and its contractor, to undertake works to construct a retaining wall approximately 35 metres in length.
Due to the size of the equipment required to undertake these works, passage for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists will be prohibited through the site during the closure times.
Emergency services have been informed of the closure and diversion details. Postal and refuse services, and bus operators have also been consulted regarding the arrangements to ensure services are not impacted.
Councillor Peter Thornton, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Assets said: "This section of the A65 has been under traffic light control for several months to keep the road functioning safely for local communities and freight traffic while we worked to establish a solution for this issue.
“It is good news that these essential works to make this vital route safe to be fully reopened have now been confirmed to start on Monday 23 September.
“We understand the closure will be frustrating for those who use the road regularly and have carefully planned works to take place overnight to reduce the impact of the closure.
“We apologise for this inconvenience this will cause and kindly ask road users to follow the signed diversion route so works can be completed as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
