Tim Bloomer is the newly elected Westmorland and Furness Council Member for Grange and Cartmel after winning a by-election held in the ward on Thursday 17 October 2024.
A Liberal Democrat, Cllr Bloomer won the seat vacated by the retirement of Cllr Sue Sanderson.
The result means that the ruling Liberal Democrat Party, led by Cllr Jonathan Brook, maintains their majority on the council with 36 out of 65 seats. The Labour Party with 15 seats, the Conservative Party with 10 seats and Independents with three seats make up the rest of the council’s numbers.
One seat, in the Kirkby Stephen and Tebay Ward, is currently vacant following the retirement of Conservative Party Member, Cllr Phil Dew. A by-election will be held in the ward on Thursday 31 October 2024.
A total of 2,589 valid votes were cast in the Cartmel and Grange By-election, representing a turnout of 29.82%. Of the votes cast, Tim Bloomer received 2,180 votes and the Conservative Party Candidate, Tor McLaren, received 392 votes. A total of 17 votes were rejected.
Speaking after the declaration, Cllr Bloomer said, “I’d like to thank the people of Grange and Cartmel for trusting me with this responsibility. It’s a great honour. This place has been my home all my life and I’m looking forward to getting stuck in to make it an even better place to live, work and thrive.”
