Westmorland and Furness communities are encouraged to share views in a consultation on 20mph speed limits that could be coming to the area.
The 28, 20mph schemes that form a part of the consultation, were put forward to Westmorland and Furness Council by local Parish and Town Councils who called for slower speed limits to make roads safer in their communities.
Over 2,000 people have so far provided feedback on the community-backed proposals and scheme designs. The lower speed limits will only be introduced if community support is determined through the consultation, so its important residents take part by Friday 18 October 2024 at 5pm.
Cllr Peter Thornton, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Assets said: “We are really pleased to see so many residents engaging with the consultation. Slower speed limits have the potential to transform our communities, making them safer and more pleasant places to live, work, and travel through.
“This is your opportunity to shape the future of road safety in your community, and your feedback is invaluable in ensuring that these initiatives truly reflect local needs and priorities.”
Those who wish to take part can do so by completing the online 20mph speed limit proposal consultation. Paper copies and scheme proposals are also available at the following libraries: Alston, Ambleside, Appleby, Barrow, Coniston, Grange, Kendal, Kirkby Stephen, Ormsgill, Penrith, Shap, Ulverston, Walney and Windermere.
The Council’s Traffic Management Team have welcomed hundreds of residents to drop in events that have taken place throughout September. A further four events are scheduled to provide communities with the chance to get questions answered directly:
