As many people as possible in Westmorland and Furness are being encouraged to pledge to do their bit for the Great British Spring Clean 2025.
This year’s campaign run by Keep Britain Tidy from 21 March to 6 April is now in its tenth year and calls on families, neighbours, friends and colleagues to join forces and pledge to pick a bag of litter from nearby streets, beauty spots and beaches to make a difference to the environment on our doorstep.
Westmorland and Furness Council can support anybody who wants to get involved in the Barrow, South Lakeland and Eden localities.
Councillor Giles Archibald, Cabinet Member for Climate, Biodiversity and Environmental Services, said: "In all corners of Westmorland and Furness we support community groups cleaning up the places and spaces we care about, all year round. They are unsung heroes making their communities better for everyone and we are proud to do as much as we can to help.
"The annual Great British Spring Clean is fantastic opportunity to celebrate this but also for anybody – schools, work colleagues, neighbours, friends – to get together if they haven't before and show their love for where they live. It doesn't have to take long and every spring clean will make a difference."
"On behalf of Westmorland and Furness Council and our friends at Keep Britain Tidy, thanks in advance to everybody in the community for your support during the Great British Spring Clean and all through the year."
After the 2024 campaign, 86 per cent of people who took part said they felt part of a national movement to tackle litter, and volunteers picked more than 425,000 bags of litter across the country.
How to take part:
Whether you choose to take part in your lunch break, as part of a team building day, or with your family at the weekend, people can take part in the campaign by:

- You can help make some noise on social media with the hashtag #GBSpringClean and #LoveWhereYouLive
In the Barrow and South Lakeland localities, Westmorland and Furness Council can loan equipment such as litter pickers and hi-vis jackets, as well as supplying rubbish sacks and arranging for crews to collect the filled bags afterwards.
In the Eden locality, all the adult litter pickers and hoops have been loaned out already, but junior litter pickers are available. Collection of collected rubbish can be arranged in Eden.
If you would like to arrange to borrow litter-picking kit or to have your filled rubbish bags collected:
