Westmorland and Furness Council today (10 February) launched its search for 35 new apprentices, providing a fantastic opportunity for individuals to kickstart their careers in local government.
The apprenticeships span a wide range of roles, including Project Management, Highways and Engineering, Finance and Accountancy, Business Administration, Digital and Data, Health and Social Care, Catering and more – with opportunities from Level 2 to Level 6 (degree-level).
The application window is now open and will close at midnight on Sunday 16 March. Applications can be submitted online at careers.westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk/apprenticeships.
Many successful applicants go on to secure permanent roles with the council, building rewarding and long-term careers in local government.
Former business administration apprentice, Lexie Steel, is among those who have successfully secured a full-time role with the council.
Lexie said: “My apprenticeship gave me the chance to learn new skills, gain experience, and work with a supportive team. I’m proud to now be part of Westmorland and Furness Council and look forward to continuing my career here. It’s been an amazing journey, and I would encourage anyone considering an apprenticeship to apply!”
The council’s dedicated Apprenticeship Team is available to answer questions from anyone interested in starting an apprenticeship, as well as parents and carers. The team can be contacted on 01539 713434 or via email at apprentice@westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk.
They will also be hosting an online information session at 5pm on Wednesday (12 February) for anyone interested in learning more about apprenticeships with the council.
Additionally, three drop-in events will take place next week in Barrow, Kendal and Penrith, where people can receive guidance and advice on taking the next steps in their career, as well as support with applications. For more information, visit careers.westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk/apprenticeships.

Councillor Janet Battye, Westmorland and Furness Council’s Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Education and Skills said:
“Apprenticeships offer a fantastic way to earn while you learn, and many of our apprentices go on to secure permanent roles and further training. Since forming as a new council in April 2023, we’ve already welcomed over 65 apprentices, 95% of whom are from the local area.
“Our mission is to ensure that people of all ages are equipped with the skills and support they need to pursue the life they want and access meaningful local employment opportunities. We want to help everyone unlock their potential – whether they are just starting out or looking to advance their career, we have something for everyone."
