Westmorland and Furness Council has been shortlisted for the ‘Local and Public Sector Net Zero Transformation Award’ at the 2025 Green Energy Awards, hosted by Regen.
This award acknowledges the crucial role that local and public sector leadership plays in transforming the UK’s energy system for a net zero future.
The council’s submission, ‘Westmorland and Furness Council – 2024: the First Year in Our Journey to Net Zero’, sets out the decarbonisation work that has been completed during the first year of their five-year carbon management strategy and action plans and the achievements made on their journey to becoming carbon net zero by 2037.
The Green Energy Awards are a leading national celebration of pioneering innovation and sustainable development in the UK’s energy system. This year, more than 120 entries were submitted by companies, communities and individuals across the UK for consideration in seven categories.
Cllr Giles Archibald, Cabinet Member for Climate, Biodiversity and Environmental Services, said:
“We’re taking our role as a net zero leader very seriously and our extensive strategies and plans are now well underway and achieving positive results.”
“It has also been encouraging to see the growth in the number of community-based initiatives, supported by the council, which rely on the goodwill and enthusiasm of individuals and community groups to succeed.”
“Being shortlisted for this award alongside other organisations delivering pioneering work in this area, shows our approach is being recognised as making positive steps in tackling climate change.”
Regen chief executive Merlin Hyman said:
“The Green Energy Awards celebrate the remarkable achievements of those driving the UK’s transition to a net zero energy system.
“This year’s nominees exemplify the innovation and commitment required to transform how we generate and use energy. We look forward to honouring their contributions at the awards ceremony.”
Westmorland and Furness Council will now proceed to the final stage of judging by a panel of independent judges. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 27 March 2025.
