Dowdales School is a proud, thriving and ambitious community. Here, we work together, as one, to ensure that everyone thrives in everything that they do. As a whole school, and as individuals, we aim high: wanting the very best for all. Everyone in Dowdales School leads by example ensuring that we treat each other as we want to be treated ourselves.
We are a community school with 820 students aged 11-16 years on roll. Situated in the historic town of Dalton in Furness, we enjoy being on the fringe of the Lake District National Park. As an Ofsted rated ‘good’ school, we believe in high expectations, excellent teaching and ambition for every young person.
We are seeking an enthusiastic Teacher of Science. There is an Academic Team Leader, a Deputy Academic Team Leader and a teacher with reponsibility within the team. A number of our Senior Leaders and Pastoral leads also teach within the Science Department.
At Key Stage 3 students study Biology, Chemistry and Physics in mixed ability groups. Students have four lessons a week. We cover a range of topics at Key Stage 3 which focus on a combination of experimental and mathematical skills, and theory.
At Key Stage 4 we offer Combined Science and Separate Science as a GCSE option.
Results in the department are strong and students enjoy their lessons. Attainment is regularly above the national average in Combined Science. We believe in providing opportunites for students to immerse themselves STEM subjects outside their lessons. Extra curricular activities are a strength at Dowdales and enrichment activities in Sciences and, more widely in STEM, support this ethos. We also offer Science clubs at lunchtime.
We are proud to have:
• Extremely high aspirations for all students at Dowdales ensuring that every young person makes excellent progress and performs to the best of their ability
• Students with positive attitudes who enjoy coming to school
• An enthusiastic and dedicated team of staff and governors
We would welcome applications from someone who has:
• A good understanding of effective and engaging teaching methods
• The ability to plan lessons and sequences of lessons with clear objectives to ensure progression for all students
• The ability to set consistently high expectations for all students through class work and homework
