We want to give people more options for travel by creating and maintaining infrastructure that is accessible for all, safe to use, direct and well connected. We want to reduce the barriers people face, particularly for every day short journeys such as travelling to work, school and the shops.
By encouraging and enabling more people to undertake journeys actively (walking, wheeling and cycling) we can help to improve people’s health and wellbeing, reduce traffic congestion and create better environments.
We have established an active travel programme to identify, develop and secure funding to deliver high quality infrastructure improvements. The programme will also deliver components to encourage behavioural change; providing people with the skills, confidence, and knowledge needed when choosing to travel more sustainably.
Programme delivery
Our active travel programme will deliver:
- Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) that identify and prioritise future improvements for cycling, wheeling and walking. The Plans focus on everyday shorter journeys within our larger towns
- Active Travel Infrastructure Strategies (ATISs) for each of our strategic corridors. The ATISs identify cycling and walking improvements over longer distances and routes more targeted at leisure and tourism
- scheme design development of routes and infrastructure identified in our LCWIPs and ATISs
- funding applications for scheme development and delivery. The Council will develop business cases and prepare bids to secure government funding for active travel schemes. Developer contributions will also be sought where appropriate
- behavioural change initiatives. The programme is closely aligned to other initiatives:
- promoting active travel to school
- social prescribing for active travel promoted by Active Cumbria
