Licence to temporarily leave private apparatus in the street
If you want to place and inspect, maintain, adjust, repair, alter or renew or maintain private apparatus under, over, across, along or up the street, you need to make a Section 50 application for the grant of a street works licence.
Private apparatus includes:
- drains
- cables
- water ducts
- gas pipes

How to complete the application form
Section 1
Please make sure that:

the application details and signatory is that of the owner of the apparatus
-
you add the postcode
-
you add valid contact numbers
Section 2
Please make sure that you:
-
add the full address of the property to be served by apparatus, including the postcode

add the description and location of the apparatus
-
have allowed at least 8 weeks for your proposed start date
-
include a plan scale 1:2500 or greater of the proposed location of the relevant apparatus marked by a red broken line
-
give a 12-figure grid reference

You also need to submit:

your authorisation from the relevant utility company to connect into their services

a copy of your contractors’ public liability cover
-
a copy of your up-to-date street works accreditation or equivalent for the supervisor
-
a copy of your up-to-date street works accreditation or equivalent for the operative/s (we require at least 1 out of every 3 operatives who will be working on site)

The licence is issued to the owner of the apparatus who is classed as an Undertaker for the purposes of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.
The licensee holder must comply with the relevant duties and responsibilities imposed by the Act, Regulations and Codes of Practice. This liability cannot be delegated to any other person or organisation.
