Street Lighting and Highways Electrical Assets

Our highways and local lighting policy, the illuminated assets we maintain and how to report a problem.

We look after most of the adopted highway network in our area. This includes maintaining almost 25,000 illuminated assets, such as:

  • road lighting
  • illuminated bollards
  • certain footway lighting systems
  • illuminated signs
  • zebra crossings

National Highways maintain the motorways and trunk roads in the Westmorland and Furness area.

Report a street light or other illuminated asset

You can report faults and issues, or pass on comments and concerns by reporting street or road damage

Highways and Local Lighting Policy

We've introduced a new highways and local lighting policy. Our aims are to:

  • improve community safety
  • increase energy efficiency
  • reduce light pollution
  • make it easier for people to report problems

The policy was approved by our Cabinet at their meeting on 18 March 2025.

Parish council lighting

Out highways and lighting teams work closely with parish and town councils.

The parishes are responsible for some of the footway lights in our area. Under the new policy, we will ask them if they want to continue looking after their lighting or to hand them over to us to manage.
