Our frontline services have been preparing for the colder months, and at Westmorland and Furness Council, we are winter ready.
Following preparations that began in early spring, the Council’s services are ready to keep residents safe, moving and cared this winter.
Westmorland and Furness Highways are reviewing local forecasting data three times each day and are ready to proactively respond to incoming weather. A fleet of 20 gritters are on standby following a full service and test run, 12,000 tonnes of grit is stockpiled at our depots and over 2,000 grit bins replenished across the area.
To protect the most vulnerable in our communities, free vaccinations have been offered through the NHS to all care home residents, and the council’s entire workforce including those providing care and education provision.
It is important for our residents and local businesses to join us in getting winter ready by understanding the risks, planning and preparing for any severe weather, particularly heavy frost, snow and flooding.
To support with this, the Council has been working with communities to establish emergency resilience plans and, will once again, be allocating funds across its three Locality Boards to further support vulnerable people across our area with energy and water bills, food, and other related essentials
