Severe weather advice

Who to contact in a power cut, how to check for weather warnings and advice on what to do if you have no water.

Severe weather can cause great disruption to daily routines. Although certain sections of the community are particularly vulnerable, including older people and those who are infirm or who have disabilities, severe weather does not discriminate.

Check for weather warnings

The Met Office issue warnings for rain, snow, wind, fog and ice. These warnings will be given a colour depending on a combination of both the likelihood of the event happening and the impact the conditions may have.

What to do in a power cut

You can call an electricity network operator, free of charge, if you:

  • have any welfare concerns related to a power cut
  • are worried about the safety of over or underground cables or substations

What to do if you have no water

Sometimes water pipes can burst in very cold weather. If this happens you should contact your water company. You can find your supplier on Water UK.
