The hard work and dedication of social workers at Westmorland and Furness Council is being celebrated this week to mark World Social Work Day (March 19).

The annual event sees social workers around the globe stand together to promote the profession.

To recognise and thank everyone involved in supporting children, families and adults within the council’s social work team, a range of events are planned, including webinars to highlight best practice and provide opportunities for colleagues to celebrate achievements and strengthen relationships. There are also community development events taking place across the week to help reduce social isolation and promote inclusion.

Social workers support a wide range of people across Westmorland and Furness, making a difference to the wellbeing of children and improving the lives of our adult population.

They work alongside older and disabled people who draw on care and support, and their carers, to enable people to have a good quality of life, and access to the services and support they need.

Social workers also help establish safe and stable environments for children and play a key role in improving families’ lives. They support children and young people with disabilities, those in need of support or protection and cared for children and those who have experienced care.

Councillor Patricia Bell, Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Care at Westmorland and Furness Council, said: “World Social Work Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate everyone involved in our social work teams and the vitally important role they play in our community.

“I want to thank them for the amazing work they do every day of the year, often in difficult circumstances, making improvements to the quality of people’s lives.”

Councillor Sue Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said: “Our social workers do an amazing job and it’s important we recognise their hard work and dedication, not just on World Social Work Day, but every day.

“We are really proud of all they do, their commitment to helping residents and making a positive impact in our communities.

“As a newly formed council, Westmorland and Furness Council is transforming the way it delivers social work and it is an exciting time to join us.”
