Residents invited to come along to next Penrith Castle Park Open Day

Gardens in Castle Park

Try your hand at free tennis activities, bowls and obstacle golf, and enjoy a guided castle tour at a free park open day on Sunday 4 May at Castle Park, Penrith.

Westmorland and Furness Council is hosting the event where the public can enjoy a range of free activities throughout the day for all ages and abilities. This follows the success of a similar open day on 13 April.

As part of this latest event, the council will be running a "Barclays Big Tennis Weekend", with free group coaching sessions and Cardio Tennis workouts from 10am until 1pm, and free tennis court access all day.

The free tennis sessions run at the following times and all equipment is provided:

  • 10.00-11.00am coached lesson for ages 4-7
  • 11.00am-12.00pm coached lesson for ages 8-12
  • 12.00-1.00pm Cardio Tennis for all ages

Castle Park Bowling Club also will be on hand to offer free bowls taster sessions on the bowling green 10am to 1pm, and an English Heritage volunteer will lead a tour of the 14th century Penrith Castle ruins at 11am, meeting at Penrith Castle bridge. The tour is open to all ages, and there will be activity sheets available for children to enjoy during their visit.

There is also the option to try the classic obstacle golf course and hire tennis and bowls equipment for free during the games kiosk’s opening hours of 10.00am to 7.00pm.

Pre-booking the tennis sessions and court hire is recommended due to limited places being available. However, other activities do not require pre-booking.

For details about the open day and tennis bookings, visit the council's website.

Councillor Virginia Taylor, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Communities and Localities, said:

“The open day in April was a great success and our next event looks set to be another great opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy trying a new activity. There’s tennis, bowls or golf, as well as exploring the historic castle ruins and ramparts and learning about our history.

“If you can’t make the open day, I encourage you to take a look at the Free Park Tennis sessions offered by Penrith Tennis Club which ensure everyone has the opportunity to play. They run every Saturday at 10am and equipment is provided so anyone can come along to give tennis a try or get tips for improving their game. It’s easy to join in - just book your place online.

“We will be hosting more open days, coaching and events throughout the summer so watch this space!”
