Construction sites

When we get a noise complaint about construction work, we'll check if they're using best practice to reduce noise. There's little we can do to resolve your complaint if less noisy options are not available.

You can report noise from a construction site to us using the forms at the start of this guide. To help us check if it's a statutory nuisance, include:

  • if noisy work starts on site before 8am or continues after 5pm – Saturday work should only be 9am to 1pm and not at all on Sundays and bank holidays
  • how long the work has been going on for
  • the activities that are causing the noise
  • the developer or business causing the noise

8am to 5pm on weekdays and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays are generally acceptable times for noise generating works. Operating outside of these times may be agreed if the works cannot be carried out at any other time. The contractor or developer must demonstrate that any disturbance will be kept to a minimum. Emergency services and some emergency repair works are exempt from these operating times.
