Music

Amplified sound can be a noise nuisance to your neighbours, including from a:

  • stereo, hi-fi or radio
  • computer or games console
  • TV
  • sound system

You can report a problem with a music nuisance using the forms at the start of this guide.

Preventing music becoming a nuisance

To reduce the chance of causing a nuisance to your neighbours:

  • keep the volume down to a level where it's unlikely to disturb neighbours
  • keep doors and windows closed
  • if you're playing music outside, try to keep it to a level that cannot be heard outside your own property
  • place speakers away from neighbours' walls, floors or ceilings – standing them on an insulating material can reduce transmission of sound
  • set the bass control to a low level – the 'bass beat' can be particularly irritating
  • consider using headphones
  • if you're having a party, let your neighbours know beforehand including what time you intend it to finish
