-  QCF recognised relevant Level 3

-  English, Maths and ICT at QCF Level 2

Within an agreed system of supervision, work with teachers to support teaching and learning, providing specialist support to maximise pupil development and achievement.

Job Purpose

This is a brief overview of the key objectives of the job including the context within the team/department.

  • Improving the outcomes for a deaf pupil
  • Supporting pupil access to the learning environment and fostering independence with the aim of enabling access to the curriculum and facilitating full inclusion into school life.
  • Facilitating communication between the pupil, their peer group, staff, and helping the pupil develop communication, language and social skills.

 

Job Responsibilities

This is a list of the main duties or tasks that the post holder will be expected to undertake.

  • The Communication Support Worker (CSW) is an essential part of the teaching team working at Greengate Junior School.
  • The primary role of the CSW is to support the Class Teacher and school staff in delivering an adapted curriculum for the pupil. This will include;

WORK WITH PUPILS

- To work with a deaf pupil, in mainstream lessons, in individual sessions when required and in other school activities such as school trips as appropriate.

- Supporting the pupil to facilitate access to the teaching and learning environments and to achieve the objectives on the Education Health and Care Plans

- Establishing productive working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations for engagement, learning and behaviour

- To facilitate access to the language of the curriculum using BSL.

- Communicating, modifying and clarifying language within the classroom

- Following up the introduction of key concepts and new vocabulary, checking understanding; re-explaining ideas

- Note taking; modifying and summarising ideas and information in note form either manually or electronically

- Supporting the development of the pupil’s communication and language skills; giving good language models; using clear voice and good spoken and written English language as appropriate

- To help the pupil in relationships with peers, facilitating communication whilst

recognising the need to be sensitive to the children; helping to build pupil self-esteem and confidence.

- Facilitating communication between the pupil and mainstream staff including interpreting for the pupil if appropriate

- Promoting independence and employing strategies to recognise and praise/reward

achievement of self-reliance

- Preparing work and learning materials for the pupil following guidance from the Teacher and taking account of the pupil’s interests, language ability and cultural background

- Monitoring and evaluating the pupil responses to learning activities

- Providing feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement

- Using ICT effectively to support learning activities and develop the pupil’s competence and independence in its use

- To communicate effectively with other agencies/professionals, in consultation with teachers, to support achievement and progress of the pupil

- Occasional supervision of children during lunch time periods, subject to agreement / negotiation

- To be involved in deaf awareness training for children, staff and others who may request this

- Contribute to reports and review meetings for the pupil as requested

- Maintain good and appropriate links/communication with the family and other supporting professionals including record keeping and other records such as home to school records
